Coming soon: GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV ute

Here in Australia, we love our utes, and with so many choices on the market, deciding which to drive can be a hard choice. To add to the dilemma, a new trend for plug-in hybrid utes is emerging. These PHEV utes offer an electric-only range, making them cheaper to fuel each week.

One of the first utes to offer this in Australia is the upcoming GWM Cannon Alpha plug-in hybrid ute, which has recently received a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

Here, we look at what the new ute offers and whether it should be on your short list of new utes in 2025.

Aggressive and distinctive looks

Starting with looks, it’s one of the most aggressive utes on the market. This makes it easy to spot and increases its appeal for ute buyers who don’t want something with plain old looks.

Sizeable side steps make it easy to get in and out and clearly show the ground clearance, which is built for on- and off-roading adventures.

The large, bold grille at the front is distinctive and can be seen from a distance. The rear tail also gives serious hard yakka vibes.

2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV Ute

Packs a (energy efficient) punch

Getting into the key specs, the Cannon Alpha plug-in hybrid is a 4x4 ute that can tow 3.5 tonnes and offers a 37.1 kWh battery pack paired with a petrol engine.

That helps it deliver up to 110km of electric-only range while accelerating from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds when you put your pedal to the metal.

This ute can be driven on electric-only modes at speeds of up to 100km/h, after which the petrol engine would kick in, which packs a punch.

It’s a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor to deliver a whopping 300kW and 750Nm of torque, which is plenty on or off-road.

The combined setup helps you get a combined fuel consumption of 9.3L/100km. But for city driving with a charged battery, it’ll get you around with minimal fuel consumption.

Convenient and practical

Charing the battery is fairly straightforward, too. It can be done by plugging it in overnight with a wall charger, or in under 25 minutes from 30-80% at a fast public charger.

This nearly-2.8 tonne ute can tow quite easily with a maximum tow-rating of 3.5 tonne, which is plenty for any job.

Whether you are towing a trailer, caravan or boat, the Alpha ute can do more towing than its recently-launched rival, the BYD Shark, which limits its towing capacity to 2.5 tonnes.

The other big thing going for the Cannon is its electric-only range, which, unlike the Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid ute, is more than double what you’d find in the Ranger. This would make it easier to get around to most metro job sites.

This ute also offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology which means that you can power your tools or camping equipment when on site without carrying a generator.

On the inside and outside, there are power points that can be used to charge/power any equipment you may have.

2025 GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV Ute Interior

Comfortable interior

Speaking of the interior, it’s quite comfortable and has a huge centre screen, which is great for displaying maps or playing music on the go.

Along with that, the screen can be used to get a view of the obstacles when off-roading which makes it a lot easier to navigate a new off-road course. It’s also quite helpful when parking in tighter car spots, which there are plenty of at shopping centres these days.

There’s another screen behind the steering wheel, which makes it drive like any other ute on the market.

The seats look quite comfortable and offer a mixture of leather-like materials as well as cloth on parts of the upholstery.

Worth considering?

This ute will be backed by a seven-year warranty which is one of the better ones on the market. Along with that, there is a five-year capped price servicing on offer.

The GWM Cannon Alpha plug-in hybrid is expected to start at around $75,000 and can be ordered under a lease or to buy outright. Deliveries for first customers are likely to occur in the first half of 2025.

With the FBT exemption on plug-in hybrid utes available on fully-settled novated leases until 31 March 2025, drivers will be in a race against time to secure a tax-reduced deal on the GWM Cannon Alpha plug-in hybrid.

How does a novated lease work?

Just like other forms of car finance, there are typically a number of payments over a fixed term, with a residual (or balloon) payment due at the end of the lease. Each party to the agreement – employer, employee, and financier – will play a specific role.

The employer

Agrees to make regular, automated payroll deductions from the employee’s pre-tax salary. Our expert team helps set everything up.

The employee

Agrees to pre-tax salary deductions, in exchange for the use of the vehicle. The vehicle can be used for business or entirely for personal use.

The financier

Procures the vehicle, establishes the lease and manages the administrative, contractual and compliance aspects of the transaction.

No, there is no minimum salary to get a novated lease.

Novated leasing approval is dependent on your capacity as a borrower much like traditional finance. This means you need to illustrate your ability to meet regular repayments over the term of the lease.

The term of the lease agreement is completely up to you.

Generally, terms of one to five years are available under a novated lease.

The length of the lease term will determine your repayments and your residual.

The amount you can borrow for a vehicle will vary depending on the lender.

In general, the minimum novated lease amount is $10,000, while higher amounts (up to $500k) are subject entirely to the repayment capacity of the applicant.

Yes, you can buy a used car both privately or through a dealership.

Some financiers will allow the vehicle to be up to 15 years of age at least end.

Buying a used car from a dealership will also still see you save the GST on the purchase price. Find out more by visiting used cars through a novated lease

Salary sacrificing a car through a novated lease can be suitable for a business owner who is also an employee of their own company, but it’s only an option if the business owner is receiving a salary from the company they own.

If you are planning to leave your current employment to start your own business, you can transfer your novated lease, provided you are paying yourself a salary.

If you are self-employed – i.e. are not paid a salary or paying yourself a salary through your own company – you will need to look at alternative forms of vehicle finance.

You have a few options available at the end of your novated lease term:

Upgrade - most of our customers tend to upgrade their vehicle, your expert consultant can help you find the right upgrade for you and even help you sell your current vehicle to help pay out the residual. If the sale price is higher than the residual, you keep that profit - tax-free!

Extend - If you want to keep the same car and continue enjoying the tax savings, we can help you refinance the residual amount for another term of your choice.

Own outright - Pay the residual amount (including GST) at the end of the lease term to own the car outright

If you leave your job during the term of your novated lease, you will still be responsible for making the finance repayments on the vehicle.

The lease will be de-novated, where the running costs are removed from the agreement and repayments work much the same way as a standard car loan.

If you are going to a new employer who offers novated leasing as an employee, you may be able to transfer your novated lease over under a re-novation, or request Novated Lease Australia set up as a partner.
